Our Story

Kisoro Tours Uganda ltd is a dream project that came true. it was started by two people. one of whom is Judith, a retired British nurse, who also has decades of hospitality expertise managing hotels. the other is dan, who was a recent graduate of Nkumba University school of science, in the department of hospitality and tourism.

The dream (our story) stretches way back to 2007, after one of the founders (Ngirabakunzi Daniel otherwise known as dan) received an opportunity to work with somerset beekeepers association in England, UK. this introduced dan to many different international visitors, and he developed an interest in tourism and more importantly, as tourism in Uganda was a relatively new and growing industry by then, there were obvious differences in professionalism and customer service in Uganda, when compared to Kenya, Tanzania and south Africa. in order for us to change the picture, and show the world the real and beautiful Uganda, we decided to create Kisoro Tours Uganda ltd which has been based on professionalism and travel advice you can trust since 2008, and we have never looked back.

Uganda is our home and we’re thrilled to share it with our clients. in 2006, we set up Kisoro Honey Producers – a community-based project available to all bee farmers living around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. we are proud to say that Kisoro Honey Producers helped 1,000 bee farmers in and around Kisoro District. dan is now not only an expert in tourism but he is also an expert in bee-keeping in Uganda

The bee-keeping project couldn’t survive on the jungle’s edge without the help of tourists so we put together a team of local guides who would take guests for a unique beekeeping experience, as well as our discovery expeditions which included traditional gorilla trekking and other wildlife safaris. we have successfully built one of the top gorilla safari companies here in East Africa.

When you travel with Kisoro Tours Uganda, you’re travelling with not just a safari company, but a group of enthusiastic friends you haven’t met yet.  our adventures and experiences go beyond incredible destinations or all-inclusive tailor-made safari packages. Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori mountains also referred to as the “Mountains of the moon” are found along the border of Uganda and therefore the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwenzori is that the highest peak in Uganda and therefore the third highest within the whole world. Mt. Stanley/ Margherita, the very best peak stands at 5109m, and also are one among the sole three on the continent with permanently snowcapped peaks which frequently melts into rivers flowing to the lowland areas like river Nyamwamba and River Mubuku. At the bottom of the mountain is Mount Rwenzori park which was gazette in 1991. Virunga Volcanoes

There are 8 Virunga mountain volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and therefore the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda shares 3 of the Volcanoes offering excellent day hikes with many unique and rare wildlife like the Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys, endemic birds and mountain vegetation.

 Muhabura (4127m)

It is the third highest peak which starts the chain of the Virungas, situated on the Rwanda – Uganda border. it’s an extended hike to the summit taking about 5 hours which makes it tough, and coming down takes roughly an equivalent . it’s alittle crater lake at the summit which may easily be circumnavigated to urge access to spectacular views of adjacent Karisimbi in Rwanda and Mikeno in DRC.

Mgahinga (3474m)

It is the littlest of the three located between Muhavura and Sabinyo, which is shorter and easier to hike. it’s a bigger crater lake though it’s difficult to circumnavigate to realize better views.

Sabinyo (3645m)

This is the tougher of the three to hike but the foremost interesting. it’s located on the border of the three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and DRC. very much like the three countries share it, Mount Sabinyo is best hiked from Uganda. The rugged terrain and therefore the many crater lakes on the edges of Rwanda and Congo make it difficult to hike in these countries. The volcano has three peaks which appear as if three spaced teeth, hence the local name Sabinyo which translates “Old Man’s Teeth”, one in Uganda and therefore the other two in Rwanda and DRC respectively.

Mountain Elgon (4321m)

Mountain Elgon, lies in eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya, with its highest peak Wagagai situated on the Ugandan side. it had been once the very best peak but erosion reduced it and is now the 8th highest peak in Africa and therefore the 4th in East Africa. aside from climbing Mt. Elgon one can enjoy the fascinating wildlife along the slopes, varied vegetation, caves, water pools, falls, and wonderful scenery.

Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls is possibly the foremost beautiful waterfall located in eastern Uganda set of three stunning waterfalls (85m, 75m and 100m) situated along the foothills of Mountain Elgon. The falls originate from the recent springs at the summit of Mount Elgon within the border of Uganda and Kenya.

African Safari Dreams That Finally Came True https://ugandatourismcenter.com/african-safari-dreams-that-finally-came-true/ https://ugandatourismcenter.com/african-safari-dreams-that-finally-came-true/#respond Tue, 29 Jun 2021 09:41:57 +0000 https://ugandatourismcenter.com/?p=8460 Safari from the Swahili word “Journey” has always been a long-held dream of mine. Having been to Uganda before, I never had the opportunity to do a Safari and thus I was not going to miss it this time.

The morning after my photography training for the girls ended through our non-profit side Cameras For Girls, we were up early and driving to Lake Mburo – a few hours outside of Kampala. On the way, we also stopped for the obligatory photo at the Equator. My driver was haphazardly taking my photo by just hitting the shutter button and not looking at the screen, so my head was cut off in most of the photos. I stopped somebody else to take my photo, which turned out much better 🙂

LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK IS THE ONLY WALKABLE SAFARI PARK IN ALL OF AFRICA

Lake Mburo is the third-largest national park in Uganda, offering Zebra’s, Rothchild Giraffe, Eland, Impala, or Uganda Cob and Warthogs just to name a few. I also saw the very rare Reedbuck, which is extremely shy and managed to capture the Grey Crested Crane, which is the national symbol on Uganda’s flag. Lake Mburo National Park is also the only walkable safari park in all of Africa. The lions and leopards disappeared many decades ago so it since has become a park you can comfortably and easily walk through, sighting and coming near the wildlife in the park, however always remember to please respect the habitat and the animals.

Grey Crested Crane, the national bird of Uganda @Amina Mohamed Photography

It was amazing to stand less than 100 feet away from the Zebra’s and walk through the tall grasses, trying to avoid the animal manure that was everywhere. After our encounter with the first herd of Zebra, we saw them everywhere and thus my interest switched to the Giraffe, which other than Murchison Falls, is the only other park to see these beautiful creatures.

WE ALMOST GAVE UP ON SEEING THE GIRAFFE’S BUT THEN FINALLY WE SAW THEM

We took over 3 hours trekking the Giraffe and finally my friend and guide Venex of Rwenzori Safaris spotted them far away in the back fields so we were able to exit the car (only park you can do this at) and walk slowly towards them. There were parents and two youngsters. Each parent was with a young giraffe, so we had to walk very slowly. I was able to get within 150 yards with her eyes on my every move. I was hoping to get them back-facing to the sun but the sun was setting behind me so it was not going to be possible, but the sight of these tall creatures in the wild made my heart thump thump with so much happiness and I had to pinch myself a few times as I could not believe I was finally on Safari.

We were rushing to get out of the park as we had extended our stay when we came upon the most beautiful sight – a mother zebra feeding her foal. I took my photos and then we just sat there for a few minutes marvelling at nature unfolding before us. They were in no rush to move and neither were we.

After our long day in Lake Mburo, we retired for the night in Mbarara (pronounced Barara) and I fell asleep with visions of wild animals in my head, having my African safari dreams finally come true.

An unforgettable experience in Uganda https://ugandatourismcenter.com/an-unforgettable-experience-in-uganda/ https://ugandatourismcenter.com/an-unforgettable-experience-in-uganda/#respond Tue, 29 Jun 2021 09:19:56 +0000 https://ugandatourismcenter.com/?p=8487 I’m Vaedy, a content manager of Fote Company. I really love Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where I can track gorillas. Although the project is the most expensive one I’ve ever experienced in the National Park, usually 650$, I feel absolutely worth it. The reason why the price is the highest is that they need enough expenditure to ensure a comfortable living environment for these animals who are facing extinction. There are different ways for you to track chimpanzees, and you never forget their gloomy eyes which make you wonder that if it is because the gorillas are as rare as recognized handsome men, sometimes you find the same look between them.

It took me three days to visit: starting from the capital, Kampala, I drove more than 400 kilometers (the second half is a mountain road) to the destination. Of course, you can also choose to take a private jet to go straight to the destination, and you can also overlook different scenery from a high altitude. The advantage of traveling by car is that you can enjoy more natural scenery, such as large wetlands, equatorial landscapes, banana gardens, tea gardens, and the most authentic Mbarara cuisine.

Highly recommended items: Track habituated chimpanzees in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, visit the Batwa dwarf tribe (feel the remnants of the hunting civilization), Lake Bunyonyi is a wonderland of the real world, Elizabeth National Park (Inadvertently look up and find a lion on a fig tree, which making your adrenal hormones soar instantly)

Hiking Mt.Nyiragongo https://ugandatourismcenter.com/hiking-mt-nyiragongo/ https://ugandatourismcenter.com/hiking-mt-nyiragongo/#respond Mon, 04 May 2020 10:26:50 +0000 https://ugandatourismcenter.com/?p=8445 The bus ride from Kampala to Gisenyi was rather long and hectic, the Congolese lady seated in front of me was giving me such a hard time with her seat. She kept on pushing it backwards with no consideration for my long legs and the effect it would have on my knees. After a few back and forth arguments with her in Swahili, I gave up and decided to gaze out of the window into the dark. I was anxious to see the boiling lava of the Nyiragongo and was so grateful that this trip was finally happening after two previously failed attempts. I have always been compelled by Mount Nyiragongo; an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,470m with the world’s largest Lava Lake visibly sighted from the crater rim at the summit point.

I was relieved when the bus finally halted at the Gisenyi bus station, it had been an exciting journey at the start but a bit grueling in the end after sitting for almost 12 hours. It was interesting to jump on a motor bike and, in my limited French, bargain for a ride to the Paradise Malahide Hotel where I was staying for the night. The service at the hotel was incredible, I was warmly welcomed by the staff especially since I’m a Travel consultant at Matoke Tours; one of the leading Tour agencies in East Africa that gives them plenty of business. The food was great and the views of Lake Kivu were quite fascinating. I was particularly impressed by a group of fishermen who lowered their canoes into the water and set off chanting and singing songs simultaneously as they rowed across the water. The staff at the Malahide informed me that the best time to go angling was from 6PM-6AM.

The border entry organized by both immigration and health officials at the Grand Barrier border post the following morning was exceptional.  I was attempting to enter Congo and was amazed by how well the system worked at both the entry and exit points. The officials were quite warm and friendly to start with, and they thoroughly checked through every passenger’s travel documentations, health certificates and even went ahead to measure our body temperatures. The Virunga Office at the border post is where most tourists coming to visit Virunga check in to get their Gorilla or Mountain hike permits, these are meant to be showcased at the National Park before the start of the hike.

As soon as the checks were done, by 8 am,  about 15 of us sat on the Virunga National Park truck and were drove towards the Kibati Patrol post which is about 1.5 -2hrs away from the Grand Barrier border. There was a heavy traffic flow in Goma town that morning with so many commuters seated on motorbikes heading to various parts of the city. The buildings in and around the city looked old and dilapidated.  Political instability in this region in recent years has greatly hindered the growth and development of the town. Excited children waved at us and tried their best to greet us in English as the truck was mainly occupied by Caucasians.

The hike started at about 10:30am after the briefing process and allocation of a porter to each individual. The trails at the start were quite muddy from the rains of the previous day but quite comfortable to walk through. The ascent eventually got steeper and tiring, hiking through the Lava rocks became difficult but we all got to the summit point safe and sound. The trek, which lasts for an average of 5-6hours is done at a moderate pace to enable even slow and relatively unfit hikers to get to the summit point. The rangers are quite helpful and have interesting stories about Goma and Congo to share with the hikers along the way. This also might be a polite way for them to distract the group from the tough terrain experience, especially at the final segment during the ascent to the crater rim.

A very fit French guy called Vincent and a lovely Norwegian girl –Maren and I were the first to get to the top, with my years of mountain hiking experience and regular exercise helping me to get there first!  The three of us quickly rushed to our huts which were quite cosy with mattresses and pillows inside.  This was the best accommodation facility I ever had in any of my mountain expeditions. The cold at the summit point was unbearable with the clothes we arrived in; so extra layers of warm clothes, socks and gloves proved to be very handy. I was pleased to see the rest of the group join us at the crater rim after about 40 minutes. We all re-united and stood at the edge of the massive crater filled with red bubbling lava –an out of this world experience and one of the biggest life highlights for all of us.

We were served warm cups of coffee and tea by our special Virunga chef, and later had deliciously prepared chicken, rice and vegetables for dinner accompanied with pineapples for dessert. The faint roars of the volcano could easily be heard from the mattresses on the floor of our designated huts, this prompted most of us to get up in the middle of the night and stare into the bubbling cauldron of fire, one of the most incredible natural phenomenon one could ever witness. Plenty of pictures and videos were captured by all of us- I had about 420 pictures on my phone, that’s how obsessed I was with the scenery!

We managed to fall asleep and woke up to freshly made coffee and tea, sausages, eggs, toast and fruit. The five star service we received during this entire trip was one we would never forget, it was unbelievable but worth the USD 300 we paid for the hiking permit. Our descent back to the starting point begun at about 7am, it was a bit of a struggle to walk through the loose volcanic rocks without tripping to the ground but thankfully none of us was injured.

We were back on ground by 10am, generously tipped our devoted porters, rangers and the entire crew that effortlessly took good care of us. We had a few grievances centered around the trip organization that we shared with the park authorities and later boarded the truck back to the Grand Barrier border, into Gisenyi and to our various hotel rooms. I went to bed happy that I had that amazing adventure ticked off my bucket list.

The following is essential for the hike:

    1. Quality hiking boots

PRISHA TOURS AND TRAVEL UGANDA https://ugandatourismcenter.com/advert/prisha-tours-and-travel-uganda-2/ Fri, 24 Jan 2020 19:16:24 +0000 https://ugandatourismcenter.com/advert/prisha-tours-and-travel-uganda-2/ Uganda is a great destination to view wildlife in both forest and savannah. Not to be missed is gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, while chimps can easily be spotted in Kibale and several other locations. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls national parks offer wonderful savannah safaris with good wildlife viewing, as does the more remote Kidepo National Park. Prisha tours and travel uganda will make you travel beyond adventures
