Programme: 3-day Gorilla Tracking Group Tour

A group tour is the best way to save on costs and share one of the most wonderful experiences of your life with others.

Heading south and west, this itinerary takes you straight to the most sought-after experience for travellers in Uganda – the rare and magical mountain gorillas. Along the way, the landscapes will give you an insight into the natural and cultural beauty of this part of East Africa and the view from your lodge is just something else….

Day 1: To Bwindi Forest/ Lake Mutanda

Your driver will pick you up at 7 a.m. from the Matoke Tours office in Kansanga, Kampala.

From here you drive to Bwindi in the south-western part of Uganda near the borders with Rwanda and Congo crossing through a stunning part of the country often referred to as ‘the Switzerland of Africa’. Along the route you will see the great countryside, banana plantations, bamboo forests and have great views over the Virunga Mountains.

For lunch you will stop at a local restaurant on the road (meal not inclusive).

Mutanda Lake Resort offers most likely the best view in Uganda, overlooking the lake with the volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (famous from the movie ‘Gorillas in the Mist’). All rooms have ensuite bath and lovely views from your private verandas.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Forest:

Today is the big day… prepare yourself for an encounter with one of Bwindi’s gentle giants: the rare Mountain Gorilla. For most people this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest boasts both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees – the only forest in Africa which can make this claim. It also hosts five other species of primate, 113 mammals, over 200 butterflies and 360 birds. The gorillas you track belong to one of nine habituated family groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day.

En route, your guide will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Your track will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the gorilla family.

The time taken to track the gorillas can be as few as 2 hours to as many as 7 hours. Once the gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Uganda’s very own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.
